ThermaLift by Thermage

In 2003, Oprah's episodes "How to Stop the Clock on Aging," "Look Younger! Live Longer!" and "Look 10 Years Younger in 10 Days," she introduced Thermage as one of the "latest cutting-edge treatments" and as a "lunchtime face-lift" that requires no recovery time.

ThermaLift by Thermage is an exciting (FDA approved in 2002) technology that tightens tissue without surgery. The procedure, also known as thermoplastic contouring or ThermaCool, an advanced system that incorporates a cryogenic-cooling spray to protect the skin’s outer surface while the RF (radio frequency) energy heats and modifies the soft tissues beneath the skin. This causes the collagen to contract and tighten. Each treatment is customized through the system’s computer to control the depth and degree of the heating process. It is non-invasive and there is no "downtime" or recuperation required.

Cosmetic Surgeons are using a combination of RF and tissue glue to lift the brow for facial rejuvenation. The result is a safer and less-invasive alternative to previous brow-lifting techniques. RF and the bio compatible tissue glue is used together to grip the brow in a higher, more aesthetically pleasing position. The result is a much longer-lasting effect similar to that of a Botox treatment. Using RF to relax the muscles and the bio-adhesive to lift the brow you can have a perfectly relaxed natural look that restores youthfulness in the upper third of the face when used together.

There is no bleeding or bruising and the risk of scarring is minimal. TheraLift can be performed without any anesthesia. Some patients may want some oral medication for the heat sensation. When the machine is pulsed, patients feel brief, mild to intense heat in the treatment site followed by the immediate cooling effect of the cryogenic spray. You may resume all normal activities immediately. Slight redness may be seen for less than an hour and no more than 24 hours.

ThermaLift can safely improve the appearance of skin in various areas including the eye area (crow's feet), lower face (jowls) and neck. ThermaLift is also approved in the treatment of acne and acne scarring. It is now possible to treat sagging or dimpled skin in areas like the legs, arms or abdomen. It may be used to even out irregular areas after liposuction. The treatment may take from 1 - 2 hours to treat a large area.

Most patients see results immediately. However, the results may be gradual over a three to six month period as the skin tightens and more new collagen is formed. Depending on the area treated, the skin laxity and your desired results, more than one treatment may be required. Treatment results last from 12 to 24 months. Your skin will continue to age as it has in the past and eventually you may wish to have another anti-aging procedure.

During your consult you will want to explain to your physician the level of skin improvement you hope to achieve. The doctor will then review your medical history and examine your skin to determine if you are a good candidate for ThermaLift. Together you can discuss your options, evaluate your expectations and determine the best treatment for you. As always, find a certified plastic surgeon to perform any type of cosmetic procedure.
